Black-eyed Susan, Coneflower

Rudbeckia hirta, or Black-eyed Susan, is a herbaceous perennial with bright yellow flower petals surrounding a cone of red-brown florets. The plant is tall, up to 24 inches, with oval leaf blades that generally alternate on the stem. It blooms in colorful patches throughout spring and summer. It is common in the sandy soils of the Texas barrier islands, and varieties are found throughout the United States.
